1 — POLICY 

1.1 In circumstances where there is a conflict between this policy and a collective agreement covering the employee in question (i.e. as to the value of the discount) the collective agreement will prevail. The discount, which must be applied for annually and in writing, covers credit courses only.

1.2 Full remission of tuition fees will be granted for full-time employees on regular employment, their spouses, and dependent children.

1.3 Such employees will qualify for remission of fees after two years' full-time employment, and any fees covered by the terms of this policy will then be remitted retroactively, to the date of first appointment, at the rate which was then in effect.

1.4 It is understood that dependent children are those who are and remain dependent up to a maximum of 25 years of age.

1.5 The remission of fees will apply for both full-time and part-time students for that number of courses normally required in the acquisition of a bachelors degree.

1.6 The fee remission will be available to dependents even if the employee becomes retired, deceased, or permanently disabled while an employee of the University.

1.7 Nothing in this policy prohibits the University from making separate arrangements with regard to the policy on remission of fees with persons on a less than two year appointment.

1.8 The value of the remission associated with a spouse or dependent child will be included on a T4A slip issued to the spouse or dependent child. If a person ceases to be an employee, a spouse, or a dependent child during a term, the value of the discount will be prorated. (Revised 2009)

1.9 Receipts for tuition fees are sent to the student by Financial Services.

1.10 When an employee asks for and receives permission to take courses during the first two years of his/her employment, no tuition fees will have to be paid during the term of the employment even if his/her employment terminates before the end of the two years.

1.11 Regular employees, who work part-time, will receive the full remission of fees for one course each year provided that course is taken by the employee. An employee will receive a prorated remission of tuition fees for other courses taken by the employee, his/her spouse, or his/her dependent children.

1.12 Temporary employees, but not including grant employees, will receive the full remission of tuition fees for one course each year provided that course is taken by the employee. The employee will receive no other benefits of this policy unless specific provision is made for additional benefits at the time of appointment.

1.13 If an employee, with less than five years of seniority, is granted a leave of absence for one year to become a full-time student, this policy will apply to one course taken by the employee. The policy will continue to apply in full to the employee's spouse and dependent children.

1.14 If an employee, with five or more years of seniority, is granted a leave of absence for one year to become a full-time student, this policy will apply to up to five full courses (30 credit hours) if they are successfully completed. The policy will continue to apply in full to the employee's spouse and dependent children.

1.15 If an employee is granted a subsequent leave of absence to become a full-time student, the fee discount policy will no longer apply to the employee, the spouse, or the dependent children during the leave of absence.
