5Q with 2015 Shinerama chair Melissa Julian
7/8/2015 10:03:04 AMMathematics major Melissa Julian of Moncton, NB is this year’s Shinerama campaign chair at Mount Allison. Shinerama, which raises money for cystic fibrosis research, is Canada’s largest post-secondary fund raiser. Shine Day takes place during Orientation Week at universities across Canada. The Mount Allison campaign also sees several fund raising events over the summer months.
1. Why did you decide to become involved with Shinerama?
Aside from raising money to help those whom I am close with that have CF, the positive attitude Cystic Fibrosis Canada and Shinerama have towards the cause is so empowering. There is no better feeling than being surrounded by people working together towards a goal in a positive way, and Shinerama has given me the opportunity to do so.
2. What is your campaign goal for this year?
$51,000 is our monetary goal, 850 participants is our goal for volunteers on Shine Day!
3. Any previews for this year's Shinerama activities?
Coming up soon — Friday, July 14 — we will be having our annual Garden Party at Hammond House, generously hosted by President Campbell and his family. We continually have grocery bagging, chili and grilled cheese lunches at The Pond, bottle drives, and more all leading up to our biggest event, Shine Day (September 5)! Keep updated by checking the MASU Shinerama Facebook page and Twitter (@MASUShinerama).
4. You're a math major, why did you decide to study in this field?
I’ve always really loved math, ever since high school. Though it wasn’t until getting into first year that I realized that I wasn’t just in love with math, I was pretty good at it. It was a hard choice to make; as I knew it would be difficult and definitely not easy on my GPA, but it has opened so many different doors for myself that I never knew were possible!
5. Why Mount Allison?
Mount Allison is a place of opportunities. We are so lucky being the size we are that we have so much diversity; you can try any activity, class, or group you can think of! Who wouldn’t want to be a Mountie?
