Preparing for Life After MtA

Have you started thinking about what you'd like to do in the future? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? How are you going to use your degree? What's next?

These are all questions that students get asked often. It can feel like the pressure in mounting to get it all figured out. This isn't the case. The most important thing to remember as you prepare for life after Mount Allison, is that career paths are rarely straight and true.

If you know exactly what you want to do, you've found your passion and are ready to embark: wonderful! If you don't, it might be time for some self reflection. 

Self Awareness

It's a really good practice to think about what you enjoy, what courses you find most meaningful, what kind of environment you'd like to work in, and what kind of lifestyle you'd like to lead. There are a lot of online resource that can help you think through some of these important aspects of your potential future careers.

  • Personality types: There are a variety of different metrics for discovering your personality type. A good, free, online quiz you can do at home is Jung Typology Test. It will give you your 4-letter personality type. If you'd like to do a complete  a complete Myers-Briggs Type test, the Wellness Centre has the necessary forms.   • Career path exploration: Career Cruising is the ultimate career exploration guide. Mount Allison has a subscription for access for all of our students (Username: "mount" and password: "allison"). Using career cruising, you can take a skills analysis quiz, giving you direct results with link to various careers.  You can also explore various paths, educational opportunities, job postings and much more. Many career planning websites have free career aptitude testing. You can find some good tests on Career Path.
