Note: 120 credits are required for a degree. A normal course load is 15 credits per term for each of the fall and winter terms. Please refer to section 11.2 of the academic calendar for complete details of the Bachelor of Arts degree. To help you map your degree requirements, degree audit forms are available. Please select the degree audit form that corresponds to the academic calendar you are following to complete your degree.

Year one (fewer than 24 credits completed)

  • Aim to complete distribution requirements by the end of first or second year
  • Think about a possible major area of study when selecting introductory level courses that are prerequisites for future courses in that discipline or area of study

Year two (24 credits successfully completed)

  • If distribution credits have not been completed, it is recommended that they be completed by end of second year
  • Select courses that will lead to a major and minor
  • Declare your major(s)/minor(s) by end of second year, prior to registering for third year courses  
Year three (54 credits successfully completed)
  • Major(s)/minor(s) must be declared before you register for third year courses 
  • Select courses for your major(s)/minor(s) following the program requirements and keeping in mind the BA requirement of 36 credits from 3/4000 level courses
  • If applicable, consult the program advisor regarding course selection for complementary courses as required for your program
  • If you intend to pursue honours, you must declare your intention to complete an honours degree by December (see academic calendar sections 10.10.4 and 11.2.20 for honours degree requirements). Eligibility to complete an honours degree program will depend on your academic performance at the end of third year and confirmation of an honours thesis advisor. Students completing an honours degree are not required to complete a minor (see academic calendar section 11.2.19
Year four (84 credits successfully completed)
  • Select courses for your major(s)/minor(s) following the program requirements and keeping in mind the BA requirement of 36 credits from 3/4000 level courses
  • If you intend to graduate in May, you must submit an application for graduation form by Sept. 30 and a degree audit form by Oct. 30
  • Register for both the fall and winter terms in all courses required to complete degree requirements

Major/minor

No more than nine credits can be counted in common between a major and a minor. Where there are more than nine credits of requirements in common, the credit value of the combined program will be at least 15 credits greater than the total credits required for the major (see academic calendar section 11.2.4.)

Additional minor

Students who complete the requirements for more than one minor will have the additional minor(s) recorded on their transcript (see academic calendar section 11.2.5.)

Double major

Students completing a double major may count up to 24 credits in common between the two majors. Even where there are requirements in common, the credit value of the combined program will be at least 36 credits greater than the total for the first major (see academic calendar section 11.2.6.)
