Note: a minimum of 120 credits are required for a degree; BMus students normally earn 121-124 credits due to ensemble registrations. A normal course load is 15 credits per term (in addition to Music ensemble credits) for each of the fall and winter terms for a total of 31 credits. Please refer to section 11.6 of the academic calendar for complete details of the Bachelor of Music degree. To help you map your degree requirements, degree audit forms are available. Please select the degree audit form that corresponds to the academic calendar you are following to complete your degree and ensure it is for BMus, not BA major in Music.

Year one (fewer than 24 credits completed)(normal load is 31 credits)

  • Confirm registration in the following core Music courses: fall — MUSC 1101, 1201, 1501; winter — MUSC 1111, 1211, 1511; full year — MUSC 1703, one core ensemble (make sure your registration shows in both terms.)
  • If your principle instrument is keyboard (piano or organ), register for MUSC 1601: Collaborative Keyboard I (in lieu of three non-music elective credits.) If your principle instrument is voice, register for MUSC 1521: Diction for Singers (if it is offered.)
  • Note: departmental permission is required to register in Music core courses. As such, registration is done for you based on the list provided to the registrar's office by the Music department
  • Audition for a Music department ensemble in September. Ensembles are each one credit courses. Finalized ensemble placements are determined by the Music department and registration is completed for you by the registrar's office based on this list.
  • Register for nine credits of non-Music electives (or six credits if you are taking MUSC 1601 or 1521). These electives should be distributed as three credits in one term, and six credits in the other term.
  • All students must attend department collegium performances/presentations from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Do not register for a course that meets during that time.

Year two (24 credits successfully completed) (normal load is 31 credits)

  • Register in the following core Music courses (assuming you have acquired the prerequisites): fall — MUSC 2101, 2201, 2501; winter — MUSC 2111, 2211, 2511; full year — MUSC 2703, one core ensemble (make sure your registration shows in both terms.)
  • If your principle instrument is voice you must register for MUSC 1521: Diction for Singers (if you have not already completed this course.)
  • Audition for a Music department ensemble in September. Ensembles are each one credit courses. Finalized ensemble placements are determined by the Music department and registration is completed for you by the registrar's office based on this list.
  • Register for nine credits of Music or non-Music electives courses (six if you are taking MUSC 1521.) These electives should be distributed as three credits in one term, and six credits in the other term.
  • Note: If your course selections for non-Music electives satisfy the requirements for a minor, the minor will be recorded on your transcript. If declaring a minor, please complete a declaration of major/minor form
  • All students must attend department collegium performances/presentations from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Do not register for a course that meets during that time.
Year three (54 credits successfully completed) (normal load is 31 credits)
  • Register for the following core Music courses (assuming you have acquired the prerequisites): fall — MUSC 3501; winter — MUSC 3511 or 3581 (registration for 3581 takes place after successful recital jury); full year — core ensemble (make sure your registration shows in both terms)
  • Audition for a Music department ensemble in September. Ensembles are each one credit courses. Finalized ensemble placements are determined by the Music department and registration is completed for you by the registrar's office based on this list.
  • Register for 12 credits of Music or non-Music electives each term.
  • All students must attend department collegium performances/presentations from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Do not register for a course that meets during that time.
Year four (84 credits successfully completed) (normal load is 27-31 credits)
  • Register for the following core Music courses (assuming you have acquired the prerequisites): fall — MUSC 4501; winter — MUSC 4511 or 4581 or 4591 (registration in 4581/4591 takes place after successful recital jury); full year — core ensemble (make sure your registration shows in both terms.)
  • Audition for a Music department ensemble in September. Ensembles are each one credit courses. Finalized ensemble placements are determined by the Music department and registration is completed for you by the registrar's office based on this list.
  • Register for 12 credits of Music or non-Music electives each term.
  • If you intend to graduate in May, you must submit an application for graduation form by Sept. 30 and a degree audit form by Oct. 30.
  • Register for both the fall and winter terms in all courses required to complete degree requirements.
  • All students must attend department collegium performances/presentations from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Do not register for a course that meets during that time.
