 Coastal Wetlands

Coastal Wetlands are important buffer zones between human land-based activities, freshwater bodies (nearby lakes, rivers, bogs), and oceans. They provide habitats for many species of microbes, plants, and animals, and collectively they comprise a highly-productive ecosystem which needs protection. All over the world, wetlands are under threat from air pollution, water pollution, agriculture, and transformation through municipal development, as well as from changes in climate. As Canada faces major environmental issues, ranging from the impact of global climate change and rising sea levels to toxins in the environment, our lack of understanding of coastal ecosystems is problematic.
