A commerce degree from Mount Allison University is an integrated, experiential, student-focused approach to the study of business. We accomplish this through our small size, the way we teach, links with the business world and our liberal education setting.
Our small campus means students and professors get to know each other; students benefit directly from one-on-one time with professors. This friendly atmosphere also allows students to benefit from extensive interaction with other commerce students, and with students from the rest of the university.
The Program
The Commerce Department offers a Bachelor of Commerce (B. Comm.) or a Bachelor of Arts with a major or minor in commerce. An Honours B. Comm. is also offered.
Commerce students explore the nature of the business world. They learn the process of effective problem solving and decision making based on quantitative analysis and human judgement. Students study a variety of business subject areas (such as sccounting, finance, marketing, management) and also take a minor in a discipline outside commerce to expand their perspective.
Exposure to other disciplines enables students to see the multi-disciplinary nature of business. Whether that is through anthropology, music, economics, physics or political science, students can begin to see how business and business studies are not insular in nature. Viewing business with a different perspective helps to develop innovative ideas and solutions in business settings and to develop unique career directions.
The Commerce Program at Mount Allison is highly flexible, reflecting the diverse business society that students will enter after graduation. Students may choose to study areas of business in depth, or they may opt for a broad selection of courses.
Course work may include developing an entrepreneurial business plan, obtaining funding, and beginning operations of a functioning business; linking by email to a university in another country to compare marketing strategies for consumer brands and experience cross-cultural business practices first hand; or developing marketing plans for product and service innovations.
You and Your Career
Business leaders have repeatedly emphasized the importance of the liberal education received at Mount Allison University. Our graduates have gone on to work for businesses, government and non-profit organizations. Commerce graduates can be found at Morgan Stanley (New York), Bear Stearns, Procter and Gamble, Maple Leaf Foods, Ernst and Young, KPMG, Aliant, Telus, Hewlett-Packard, the major banks (both Canadian and International), Economic Development Corporation, Halifax Regional Municipality, Canadian Revenue Agency, the St. John Sea Dogs and many more.
Out of The Classroom
Beyond the classroom, there are connections to business through field trips, visiting speakers, and through videoconferencing. Case and business plan competitions and student conferences allow MTA students to interact with other academic institutions, industry and the community. Students can also participate in an international exchange during their degree. Through these exchanges, students gain an appreciation of cultural, social, political and economic considerations that affect domestic, as well as global business.
There are opportunities to work on specific projects with businesses or community organizations. Students take what they have learned in class and apply it in a practical setting and in turn use what they have learned from this experience and bring it back to the classroom.
A Whole-life Business Degree
The advantage of a liberal education goes far beyond the benefits to your understanding of business. A liberal education teaches students how to think and how to learn, a process which continues for a lifetime. It helps students to understand the world and to see how each area of study fits together to form a whole. It also leads to a fuller understanding of the self. It contributes to commerce graduates being more adaptable, more creative, and more analytical.
Whether your aim is to seek employment upon graduation, pursue graduate studies, or travel the world, a commerce degree from Mount A provides you with the knowledge and experience to understand business, yourself, and the world around you. It is not simply about getting a degree, it's a life choice. At Mount Allison we do things a little differently and it works!
