Visa

If you are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and your intended studies will last for more than six months, you will require a study permit. Students from some countries also require a Temporary Resident Visa in order to enter Canada. Please click here for a list of countries that require a Temporary Resident Visa.

If you are already living in Canada and have decided to become a student, you must still apply for your Student Permit from outside of Canada. In this case, you can send your application form to the closest Canadian Consulate in the United States or apply from within your home country.

You must apply for a Student Permit and a Temporary Resident Visa from outside of Canada at a Canadian Embassy, High Commission, or Consulate in your home country. For a list of offices, please visit Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Please start your application process as soon as you receive your letter of acceptance, or conditional acceptance, to Mount Allison. Make sure that you apply for your Student Visa and Temporary Resident Visa well in advance of your expected departure date for Canada so that you will receive your Visa(s) in time. In some countries, it can take up to six months or more to obtain a Student Visa.

Work

International Students may now work up to 20 hours per week. Contact financialaid@mta.ca for more information or click here for information on work opportunities for international students in Canada.

Health Insurance

As an international student at Mount Allison, you purchase a special health care plan, which will provide comprehensive health-care coverage for the period of your stay in Sackville. It is important that you bring your own medical records. If you have a chronic medical condition, ask your physician to write a short medical history for your new physician in Sackville. This history should be in English whenever possible. Before you leave home, you should have a dental examination and any necessary dental work done. Dental care is not covered by your medical insurance and is very expensive in Canada. Also, we recommend that you have an eye examination and obtain a second pair of glasses, if applicable.

Student Card

Students can apply for an International Student Identity Card (ISIC). As a holder of ISIC you become a participant of the International Student Travel Fraternity, entitling you to discounts throughout the world. Also available are The International Youth Travel Card (Go 25) and Youth Hostel Card, which offer many discounts for youth under the age of 26. Contact your local travel bureau for more information.

Baggage

When packing, be aware that airlines have limitations on baggage. If you have excess baggage, you will be charged a fee. Check with airlines for information on baggage allowance.

Identification

Always carry your passport and visa in a safe place where you can easily access them for customs. You may also require your acceptance letter from Mount Allison and evidence of adequate funds, so have documentation easily accessible. You should make photocopies of your passport and birth certificates and keep these copies in a separate and safe area of your baggage.

What to Pack

For information on what you can legally bring into Canada, contact the Canadian Embassy, Consulate, or High Commission in your country. Electrical equipment you bring should be compatible with Canadian voltage, which is 110 volts, or 60Hz.
