1 - Preamble
This policy and the accompanying appendix have been developed in response to concerns associated with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). In conjunction with the release of this policy, Mount Allison University will also seek to provide resources on SARS to the University and surrounding community as a means of enabling individuals to become better informed of precautions that can be taken, statistics, and medical information.

Regions of concern indicated in this policy are based on the classification of regions by Health Canada. As these regions can change constantly, it is best to refer to Health Canada's Website for up to date classification:

Similarly, this policy will be updated as concerns surrounding SARS evolve and policies and procedures of Health Organizations alter as necessary.

2 - Regarding Study Abroad Programs, Mount Allison will:
  1. continue to support students currently abroad,
  2. proceed with Programs for the 2003 academic year,
  3. proceed to welcome incoming exchange students for the 2003 academic year,
  4. monitor the global situation and make assessment of these positions (1, 2, 3) as required, and
  5. maintain regular contact with all students participating in a Mount Allison study abroad program and provide information to parents regarding the institutional policy.

3- Regarding all students arriving from a region of concern or who have had contact with a person suspected of having SARS, Mount Allison will:
  1. follow the lead of Health Canada, currently involved in screening and tracing procedures of all airline passengers arriving from regions of concern and Public Health Services which has in place protocol and procedures in response to SARS,
  2. ensure that information is accessible, explaining procedures associated with SARS, in Sackville,
  3. expect the students to monitor their health for symptoms until 10 days have passed since they were in a region of concern or since they last had contact with a person suspected of having SARS, in compliance with Health Canada's procedures, and
  4. request that any student with possible symptoms refrain from visiting campus and call Telecare (1-800-244-8353) for assessment and triage.

4 - Regarding a student who is assessed as a suspect or a probable case by a medical professional, Mount Allison will:
  1. request the student to follow the advice of Public Health Services as stated in the Public Health Management of SARS cases and contact,
  2. release the student from classes and associated work, tests or exams (if applicable), and
  3. under the direction of Public Health Services, provide a quarantine/isolation space (as defined by Health Canada) to any such students residing on campus who may not have sufficient funds to establish accommodations elsewhere during the period of quarantine/isolation and establish a list of caregivers who would be able to provide assistance during the period of quarantine/isolation. It will be the responsibility of Public Health Services to assess any such space for suitability.

5 - Regarding all students, Mount Allison will:
  1. ensure that information is accessible, explaining procedures associated with SARS, in Sackville, and
  2. request that any student with possible symptoms refrain from visiting campus and call Telecare (1-800-244-8353) for assessment and triage.

6 - Regarding the visitation of family, friends, alumni, business personnel, et al, Mount Allison will:
  1. follow the lead of Health Canada, currently involved in screening and tracing procedures of all airline passengers arriving from regions of concern and Public Health Services which has in place protocol and procedures in response to SARS,
  2. ensure that information is accessible to all visitors, and in particular to those who have come directly from regions of concern, or who have had contact within the past 10 days with a suspected case of SARS, explaining procedures associated with SARS, in Sackville,
  3. expect all visitors who have come from or through regions of concern, or who have had contact with a suspected case of SARS, to monitor their health for symptoms until 10 days have passed since they were in a region of concern or their contact with a suspected case of SARS, in compliance with Health Canada's procedures,
  4. request any visitor with possible symptoms to refrain from visiting campus and to call Telecare (1-800-244-8353) for assessment and triage, and
  5. rely on Public Health to monitor and contact individuals who may be considered to have been in contact with a suspect or probable SARS case through existing procedures.

7 - Regarding travel by employees of the University, paid for by the University, to regions of concern, Mount Allison will:
  1. encourage University personnel not to travel to regions of concern,
  2. require personnel to consult their supervisor before such travel and to take all necessary precautions during such travel, and
  3. monitor the global situation and make assessment of this position (1) as required.

8 - Regarding travel by employees of the University, not paid for by the University, to any regions of the world, Mount Allison will:
  1. recommend that the employee become acquainted with official travel advisories through the World Health Organization, Health Canada and Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and
  2. encourage the employees to follow the advice of those advisories.

9 - Regarding an employee returning from travel in a region of concern, or who has had contact with a person suspected of having SARS, Mount Allison will:
  1. follow the lead of Health Canada, currently involved in screening and tracing procedures of all airline passengers arriving from regions of concern, and Public Health Services which has in place protocol and procedures in response to SARS,
  2. ensure that information is accessible, explaining procedures associated with SARS, in Sackville,
  3. expect such employees to monitor their health for symptoms until 10 days have passed since they were in a region of concern, or since their last contact with a person suspected of having SARS, in compliance with Health Canada's procedures,
  4. request that any employee with possible symptoms refrain from visiting campus and call Telecare (1-800-244-8353) for assessment and triage, and
  5. be prepared to answer any concerns other employees may have in relation to the return of an employee from a region of concern.

10 - Regarding an employee who displays symptoms of SARS and is assessed as a suspect or a probable case by a medical professional, Mount Allison will:
  1. request the employee to follow the advice of Public Health Services as stated in the Public Health Management of SARS cases and contact,
  2. provide the employee with sick leave,
  3. investigate the possibility of enabling the employee to continue working during the quarantine/isolation period through telecommuting, and
  4. request that departments at Mount Allison discuss and prepare procedures to respond to possible occurrences associated with SARS being imported into the Mount Allison community.
