Mount Allison word mark
Policy #: Appendix A for 2104
Subject: SARS Resource Information Document

Mount Allison is actively monitoring all advisories issued by Health Canada, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, The World Health Organization and the New Brunswick Department of Health and Wellness. The University has also watched closely the decisions and services provided by other Canadian institutions in response to global events. As a result, Mount Allison has taken the initiative to write a comprehensive policy that reflects the procedures of Health Canada and Public Health Services. In conjunction with this, the University would like to provide the following resources on SARS, enabling individuals to better understand the virus, procedures and policies around world, and statistical information. It is important to put all of these events into context, therefore we invite you to utilize the resources available below.
Procedure
Individuals showing symptoms of SARS are encouraged by Public Health Services to contact Telecare (1 800-244-8353) for an assessment. The Telecare system has been set up to provide Triage services, to assess individual cases for symptoms and provide direction to people who require medical assistance. Individuals are requested not to go to their doctor's office if they are showing symptoms of SARS. It is also encouraged that individuals telephone Telecare, before going to the Sackville Memorial Hospital so that Telecare can determine whether or not you should be sent directly to the Moncton Emergency Department in the event that you may be a suspect or probable case or it is safe for you to go to Sackville Memorial Hospital.
If you do not use the Telecare service, and you think that you might have symptoms of SARS, it is recommended that you call Sackville Memorial Hospital in advance to alert of your arrival and, upon arrival, enter the Sackville Memorial Hospital not through the front door but rather through the Emergency door located on the right hand side of the building (when facing the Hospital). Signs are posted on the Hospital and Emergency entrances for guidance. You will be assessed for symptoms and sent to the Moncton Emergency Department if it is possible that you are a suspect or probable case.
