On
the edge of the Mount Allison campus stands the Marjorie Young Bell
Convocation Hall, a concert hall facility that seats just over 1500
people. The Hall, built in 1965/66, serves as a venue for university
convocations, debates, guest speakers, theatre and concerts as well
as visiting opera, ballet, choral and theatrical companies. Large
conference groups use the Hall in the summer conference season.
The funds to build, furnish and equip the Hall were given by Ralph
Pickard Bell. The Hall, at the time of its opening, was "thought
the finest facility of its kind in Eastern Canada." The six
imposing columns and massive cornice of Wallace stone, the steps
and platform of polished granite, the cut glass chandeliers and
three storied open foyer area with walls of matched Italian marble
lend a grand entrance for those attending events and performances.
The building also houses a Casavant Frères pipe organ and
a concert grand Steinway & Sons performance piano.
