Residence Support System

Moving into a new community and a new way of living can be a challenge, and for this reason the residence system has been set up to make that transition as smooth as possible. Room assignments, meal plan and accommodation changes, house accounts and general facilities issues are coordinated by the Residence Assistant (364-2252 or resroom@mta.ca.). Residence Staff live in residence and are available to students on a daily basis. The Director of Student Life is responsible for training and guidance of residence staff.

Residence Dons
Every residence has a Don (or Co-Dons) to ensure things run smoothly and to provide guidance and advice.  Most Residence Dons are adults employed in academic or administrative departments at the University and live in apartments within each residence building.  Our students often refer to them as parents away from home.

Residence Assistants and Assistant Dons
Residence Assistants (RA) and Assistant Dons (AD) are upper-year students employed by the University. There is at least one RA per floor in each residence.  The ADs are assigned to the larger residences of Campbell, Harper and Windsor Halls. RAs and ADs assist the Dons in providing a safe and supportive living environment for students.

Academic Residence Mentors
Academic Residence Mentors assist first-year students with the academic resources necessary to make a successful transition from high school to university life.  Each residence is assigned one mentor to organize help sessions, provide access to tutors, and hold regular office hours in their respective residences.

Residence Council
Residence Councils plan house events such as house parties, coffee houses, semi-formals, floor/house suppers and fundraisers for university or community groups such as Relay for Life. Each student living in residence pays a house fee to the Residence Council to fund these events (i.e. purchasing decorations, beverages and snacks) and to purchase items for the residence such as lounge televisions, pool tables, foosball tables and other general items.

Each Residence Council has an Executive consisting of a President, a Social Chair or Co-Social Chairs and a Secretary/Treasurer.  The larger residences may elect a Vice-President.  These students are elected by the residence in February of each year. Residence executives will greet you during move in day to hand out house tee-shirts and let you know about upcoming house events. They will also be your wake-up call during busy Orientation week!

Volunteer Positions
New students to residence are encouraged to get involved in residence life by participating in September elections for SAC rep, floor reps, food committee reps, recycling reps, and other leadership positions.
