The Faculty of Arts at Mount Allison offers students an exciting choice of programs in the fine and performing arts, modern languages, and the humanities. Humanities refers to academic subjects, also called disciplines, like history, philosophy, English, classics, and religious studies. In addition, the Faculty offers several innovative interdisciplinary programs that allow students to study a number of thematically related subjects. The primary goal of all instruction in the Faculty of Arts is to help students achieve creative independence of thought, a skill essential for active and engaged citizenship and vital to any career. All thinking and creative activity takes place within various traditions. Programs in the Faculty of Arts are designed to immerse students within those traditions so that they not only understand them, but are also able to think critically about them. Students are also encouraged to expand their horizons by considering other traditions and practices, and this openness helps make them adaptable to new ideas and ways of doing things. Whether students choose to learn another language, to study music or fine arts, or to analyze philosophical arguments, historical narratives, or works of art and literature, they can be assured that the Faculty of Arts presents them with all kinds of ways to flourish intellectually and develop critical skills that will help them in any career they pursue.

The Faculty of Arts offers three degrees — a Bachelor of Arts (BA), a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), and a Bachelor of Music (BMus). Each degree program blends innovation and tradition, and each enables students to work closely with faculty members. Students applying to the BFA and BMus programs must make special applications, so please consult the appropriate department’s web site for details.
