Accommodation

Residences
Mount Allison is a residential university with residence facilities available for approximately 55% of the student population. The wide range of residence types reflect different lifestyles.

Since 1973 the University has offered co-ed residence facilities to its students. Bennett, Bigelow, Trueman, Windsor and Bermuda House offer single and double rooms while Edwards and Harper have single rooms. The Monastery, two blocks from campus, is a smaller residence with single and double accommodations for 3rd and 4th year students. Some co-ed residences are divided by floor or by wing, while others have male and female rooms integrated on the same floor. Thornton provides accommodation primarily for upperclass male students in single rooms. Hunton and Palmer are women's residences with single and double rooms.

In keeping with its wish to provide choices in accommodation, the University offers students the opportunity to live in La Maison Française or Das Deutsches Haus. These are small co-ed houses for students wishing to immerse themselves in French or German language and culture.

Mount Allison also provides family type accommodations in small houses close to campus.

Each residence provides a lounge, kitchenette and coin-operated laundry facilities. All residence rooms are completely furnished, with free cable TV hook-up, a telephone (which must be connected and billed to the student on a user-pay basis). Rooms are also wired to the central computer network and, for a nominal hook-up fee, you will have access to e-mail, student-specific software, the Internet and more.

Prospective students should note that the University cannot be responsible for personal property and that pets, firearms and explosive materials are not permitted in residence. Students are strongly advised to insure personal effects.

Withdrawal From Residence
A student wishing to withdraw from the University must begin the process in Student Services by completing a "NOTICE OF ACADEMIC/RESIDENCE WITHDRAWAL" form. Academic withdrawal is not considered complete until the Dean of Students has signed the withdrawal notice. The official date of withdrawal, for purposes of fee administration, will be the date the signed form is received in the Financial Services Office. Note that relevant dates and academic consequences of withdrawal do not coincide with refund dates and are separately outlined in Section 10 of the calendar - Academic Performance. Non-attendance at classes does not constitute withdrawal.

Residence Opening Dates
(1) Fall Opening: 1997 residences are open to first-year students on Sunday, August 31st and for returning students after 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 2nd.
(2) Christmas and Spring Closing: Students are required to vacate residence twenty-four hours after their last examination has been written.

Non-University Housing
The Student Services Office attempts to maintain for the use of students a list of accommodations available in Sackville and area. Students wishing to live in town are invited to use this information.

Residence Application Procedure
All first year students who wish to be considered for residence accommodation should complete both sides of the Residence Application card that is enclosed with your offer of admission. This card should be completed and returned to Student Administrative Services along with the $100 Admissions Confirmation Deposit. A $500 Residence deposit is required, and must be postmarked by July 1st at the latest.

Provided you have met all admission and deposit deadlines and have submitted your $500 residence deposit, you are guaranteed residence accommodation.

Please note that we will attempt to accommodate individual preference on a first-come, first- served basis, using the date on which the $100.00 admissions confirmation deposit is received. We ask that you take the time to answer all the questions on the application, as this helps us to place students appropriately within the residence system.

1st year students residence deposit refund dates: On or before July 1st - $500.00 From July 2nd to July 18th - $200.00 From July 19th to August 22nd - $150.00 No refund after August 22nd. Returning students follow the procedures outlined in Room Draw Rules and Procedures as circulated in February. Former and Strasbourg students will be mailed a residence application at the time of application.
