Computer Facilities
Computing Services Department website Mount Allison University's computer resources include a DEC VAX 4000-100 (library), one DEC Alpha 3000-800 (administrative), four more DEC Alpha Servers providing services to the Local Area Network, a Macintosh Power PC 9150 AppleShare server which serves applications to the networked Macintoshes on campus, and a networked CD-ROM server which provides the library's periodical indexes as well as other on-line documentation. Mount Allison University's library catalogs are on-line and available from terminals, PCs, and Macintosh computers on campus. Mount Allison has an Ethernet based network, with an ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) backbone that connects all buildings on campus. Students with PCs or Macintosh computers can have the lab environment in their room as well as have access to the Internet. As one of millions of sites on the Internet, Mount Allison provides users with access to library catalogs world-wide, electronic mail, UseNet news groups, the World Wide Web, Gopher information services, remote file transferral (FTP), as well as other TCP/IP services. There are several public access computer labs at Mount Allison: four PC labs with a total of 83 DEC 486/DX 33MHz and 10 Pentium-based networked PCs, and one public Macintosh lab with a total of 13 Macintosh 5200s, four Macintosh 7200s, an optical scanner, an Imagewriter and a Laserwriter. In order to access all network services from residence, students with PCs should have at least a 486 DX2/66 with 8MB RAM, DOS 6.x and Windows 3.11 (with 50MB free HD space), or Windows95 (with 100MB free HD space). For Macintosh users, a computer with a PowerPC processor with 8MB RAM, System 7.5.3, and 20MB free HD space is recommended. Computing Services provides advisory and training assistance to all sectors of the university and employs part-time student advisors.
