Computer Facilities

Computing Services Department website

Mount Allison University’s computer resources include servers based on Digital’s Alpha processor. Providing file and print services to labs, residences and offices, as well as Internet services such as electronic mail, www and news, are an AlphaServer 4000, an AlphaServer 2100A, two DEC 3000-400s, and two AlphaServer 400s. Administrative computing resides on a DEC 3000-800, while a DEC VAX 4000-100 serves the Ralph Pickard Bell Library. A Macintosh Power PC 9150 Workgroup Server running AppleShare serves applications to the networked Macintoshes on campus. The University’s library catalogues are on-line and available from terminals, PCs, and Macintosh computers on campus. Periodical indexes are also available.

There are seven publicly accessible computer labs on campus. The six PC labs have well over one hundred networked DEC 486 and Pentium computers. The MAC lab has 13 Macintosh 5200s, four Macintosh 7200, an optical scanner, and Image Writer and a LaserWriter.

PC Hardware
Netscape Navigator Web browser, Eudora for e-mail, Corel Perfect Office for word-processing and spreadsheets, Paradox for databases, Minitab and SPSS statistical packages, several programming languages and many course-specific programmes are available. As well, there is CD-ROM based information offered in conjunction with the Ralph Pickard Bell Library and access to its on-line catalog, Internet programs like News, FTP and Telnet and various viewers, and utilities including the latest virus detecting software. In addition, one of the labs offers multimedia language instructional software.

MAC Software
Netscape Navigator Web browser, Eudora for e-mail, WordPerfect, MacWrite, FileMaker, Pro, Canvas, Claris Works and Resolve, Systat and SAS JMP statistical software are all available.

The campus network has an ATM backbone, with switched and share Ethernet connections at the desktop. Thirty-six campus buildings are connected to the campus fibre-optic network. All offices, class rooms, and students residences have network jack. The University is a member of the NB/PEI Educational Computer Network and has a multi-megabit ATM connection to other ECN institutions and the Internet.

These network services are available for a small fee to all students living in any residence who have a computer with a current version of Windows or MacOS and sufficient memory, plus CPU and disk resources.

Computing Services provides advisory and training assistance to all sectors of the university through Helpdesk personnel, student lab advisors and residence network consultants.
