Drama Courses
With the exceptions below, all descriptions of Drama courses available are given in the appropriate course description section. The only interdisciplinary drama courses offered are described below.

2021 INTRODUCTION TO DRAMA
This course introduces students to conventions, forms, and devices of drama as they emerge under, and respond to, specific theatrical and cultural conditions.

Prereq: English 1001 or permission of the Department.

Note: Credit cannot be received for English/ Drama 2200 and English/Drama 2021. This course is cross-listed as English 2021 and may be taken as three credits in either discipline.

3001 DRAMATIC THEORY
This course studies ways in which theatre practitioners have understood their art and the ways in which it reflects their world. Among topics to be explored are theories of representation, performance theory, tragic theory, comic theory, Naturalism, Expressionism, and Political Theatre.
Prereq: English/Drama 2021

Note: Credit cannot be received for both Drama 3000 and from 3001.

3051 ACTING AND DIRECTING
This course exposes students to theory and practice of acting and directing, exploring the spatial and temporal means by which actors and directors interpret a script on the stage. The class will study the themes, structure, rhythms, subtext, and visual dimensions of three or four dramatic texts, culminating in the production of one of them. The course is offered once every second year, in an alternating rotation with 3061.

Prereq: English/Drama 2021 or permission of the instructor.

Note: Credit cannot be received for both Drama 3050 and Drama 3051.

3061 PRINCIPLES AND METHODS OF PRODUCTION
This course introduces students to the means by which dramatic texts are given life in time and space on the stage. Principles and methods of set design and construction, costuming, lighting and sound design, and stage and theatre management are all explored, with special attention to three or four dramatic texts, one of which will receive production. The course is offered once every second year, in an alternating rotation with Drama 3051.

Prereq: English/Drama 2021 or permission of the instructor.

Note: Credit cannot be received for both Drama 3050 and Drama 3061.

4011 SPECIAL TOPICS IN THEATRICAL INTERPRETATION I
This course consists of a project in acting, directing, writing, or design, proposed by a student and approved by a committee of those teaching in the Drama Programme, and supervised on an individual basis by a member of faculty teaching in the programme. Its practical results will be supported by written and/or visual materials as appropriate.

Prereq or co-req: Drama 3051 or 3061 or French 3151 and 3161 and permission of the Director of Drama.

4021 SPECIAL TOPICS IN THEATRICAL INTERPRETATION II
This course is for students who have received credit for Drama 4011 above, but wish to pursue a second independent project in acting, directing, writing, or design, to be approved by a committee of those teaching in the Drama Programme, and supervised on an individual basis by a member of faculty teaching in the programme. Its practical results will be supported by written and/or visual materials as appropriate.

Prereq or co-req: Drama 4011, 3051 (or French 3151 and 3161), Drama 3061, and permission of the Deirector of Drama.
