Linguistics
2001 INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF LANGUAGE
A general interest course intended to acquaint
students in all fields with the historical,
structural, social, and psychological forces at
work on language. Beginning with a
consideration of various aspects of language,
its origins, and historical development and
structure, the course proceeds to an
exploration of the social and psychological
aspects of language use.
Prereq: None.
3001 FUNDAMENTALS OF GENERAL LINGUISTICS.
A study of the structure and meaning of
language, including a review of human
articulatory capabilities and the patterns of
distinctive sounds in world languages, the
study of word formation and general concepts
in sentence generation, and the patterns of
meaning in language. The course also
examines the phonological and historical
forces involved in language change.
Prereq: Linguistics 2001 and a minimum of
six credits in a language other than English; or
permission of the Department.
3011 LANGUAGE AND SOCIETY
An introduction to issues and methods in
sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and applied
linguistics, including topics in language
variation, language and culture, the contact of
languages and bilingualism, and first-and
second-language acquisition.
Prereq: Linguistics 2001 and a minimum of
six credits in a language other than English; or
permission of the Department.
