Philosophy 4000 Series

4000 TWENTIETH CENTURY SPECULATIVE PHILOSOPHY
An examination of certain aspects of British philosophical thought with reference to such writers as F.H. Bradley, McTaggart, Moore, Russell, Ayer and Whitehead.
Prereq: Six credits in Philosophy; or permission of the Department.

4101 ADVANCED ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY
Advanced study in one or more of the main philosophers of these periods, in a sequence which captures the impact of Ancient upon Medieval thought (e.g. Plato or Aristotle, Augustine or Aquinas).
Prereq: Six credits in Philosophy; or permission of the Department.

4200 KANT
This course is primarily an investigation of Kant's critical philosophy, beginning with The Critique of Pure Reason. The second and third Critiques may also be examined.
Prereq: Six credits in Philosophy; or permission of the Department.

4301 19TH CENTURY EUROPEAN THOUGHT
A study of some nineteenth century European philosophers, especially Marx.
Prereq: Six credits in Philosophy; or permission of the Department.

4411 TWENTIETH CENTURY LINGUISTIC PHILOSOPHY
A study of that body of 20th century literature in which the ways we talk are analyzed into the ways we are. Literature includes work by G.E. Moore, Wittgenstein, Austin, and others.
Prereq: Six credits in Philosophy; or permission of the Department.

4511 PHILOSOPHY OF MIND
A study of the contemporary philosophical arguments which attempt to resolve the real nature of mental states vis à vis the physical states of the brain; how it is we have knowledge of our own sensations, beliefs, desires, our own consciousness and how we gain knowledge of other minds; and also the more general questions of how we should best proceed to resolve these issues.
Prereq: Six credits in Philosophy; or permission of the Department.

4600 PHENOMENOLOGY
A study of a number of selected problems according to the methods and concerns of this twentieth century movement.
Prereq: Six credits in Philosophy; or permission of the Department.

4950/4951 PROBLEMS IN PHILOSOPHY
A senior seminar or tutorial course to be determined by the student(s) and instructor(s) involved.
Prereq: Written permission of the Department.

4980 HONOURS TOPIC
