The Student Union
The Student Union of Mount A. is governed by
the Students' Administrative
Council (SAC). This is a body of elected and appointed persons
who represent, organize, and plan for the interests of the students.
All students taking more than 3 courses (full-time status) are members
and pay the SAC commutation fee. However, the wider Mount A. community
benefits from many of the activities the SAC pursues.
SAC represents the students through council; reps from on and off campus,
and the five member executive, yet there are many other positions,
appointed through the SAC that can allow any students the opportunity
to get involved. (Many positions include small honoraria.) The SAC also
employs an administrator and office manager to aid in the work of the SAC.
The SAC is located in room 215 (second floor) of the University Center
(commonly called STUD). Some of the services and events we provide include:
- Organizing ORIENTATION, HOMECOMING, WINTER CARNIVAL and participation with FLASHBACK (annual variety show)
- Photocopying and faxes (pay as you play)
- Examination File
- Student Directories and your Allisonian Yearbook
- MAST (Mount Allison Student Tutoring)
- Walkhome Program
- Volunteer Association
- Dances, speakers, entertainment...AND MORE!!
The SAC also sponsors and promotes the Clubs
and Societies (C&S) of Mount Allison. These are a great asset and a
wonderful way to get involved in your campus. They include:
- Academic Departments C&S (for ex. Commerce Society, Fine Arts Society, etc...)
- Political C&S - Young PC's, Young Liberals and Young NDP's
- Musical C&S - Chapel Choir, Conservatory Chorale, Ethel Peake Memorial Society, Mt. Allison Brass Ensemble
- Blue/Green Society (Environmental)
- Eurhetorian Society (Debating)
- Garnet and Gold Society (Musical Theatre group)
- Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship
- Student Christian Movement (SCM)
- Society of All Nations (SAN)
- World University Services of Canada (WUSC)
Any student wishing to form a club or society can do so. Come to the SAC
and we will help you design and start. Athletic clubs, or intramurals are
all run through the athletics department.
Students have wide spread representation on the campus, including
membership on the Board of Regents (governing body) and Senate
(academic body). Full-time students are also enrolled as members
of the national student lobby group, the Canadian Federation of
Students (CFS) and the provincial counterpart CFS-New Brunswick.
Men's & Women's Intramural Councils
The students elected to these bodies organize the intramural program
in which some 800 students participate annually. Teams are formed from
the various residences and compete in such sports as flag-football, hockey,
baseball, volleyball, basketball, and soccer.
The Argosy Weekly
This weekly newspaper has been published for over 125 years by an
all-student staff. The newspaper is editorially independent of both
the University administration and the student council.
CHMA FM 107
In 1985 the CHMA Radio Station was converted to FM Stereo frequency. Mount
Allison is one of the smallest universities to have an FM radio station.
The staff (from the announcers to the technicians) is composed mainly of
students and members of the University community, all working under a
full-time Station Manager. The Station is funded by students fees and
advertising revenues and reaches a listening audience of over 15,000.
Garnet And Gold Society
The Garnet and Gold Society offers students a chance to take part in the
production of a major musical. Students coordinate all aspects of the
production, which is usually presented early in the new year.
Windsor Theatre
This theatre group puts on major productions each term. In addition, lunch
time theatre and monthly productions, often written by members of the
Mount Allison community, are also offered.
Student Activities Office
This branch of the S.A.C. co-ordinates all campus entertainment. In
addition to the usual dances, movies, live bands, and cultural
performances, a number of popular special events are also offered.
These include Orientation Week, Homecoming, Junior Prom, Winter
Carnival and Graduation events.
Residence Council
All students living in the University's various residences elect
house councils and executives. These bodies organize house events
and co-ordinate social activities. Each House Council President
sits on Residence Council, a body which represents residential
concerns to the Dean of Students and organizes the very popular
inter-residences activities.
The Tantramarsh Club
The campus pub, established in 1974, is a vital place for social
gatherings. The pub is the only permanently licensed facility on
campus and offers to its members a giant T.V. screen, pool tables,
a dance floor and weekly special events.
Student Employment
Part time job opportunities are plentiful at Mount Allison. Students
may earn extra income through employment with Food Services, the
Campus Police force, Residence Staff, Bar Services and the
Tantramarsh Club.
