The Positive Space Campaign is an initiative to increase awareness of
heterosexism, homophobia and transphobia at Mount Allison University, ultimately providing students and staff with a more inclusive and positive university experience.
Although many staff and students consider themselves supportive of the queer community and causes, they may not be aware of what is involved in being a true
ally. Still other staff and students may be looking for a way to become more
aware of queer-related issues. The Positive Space Campaign provides a workshop to help Mount Allison staff and students become more sensitive about issues and situations surrounding gender and sexual identity.
Topics include an introduction to inclusive language, avoiding the
assumption of heterosexuality, what to do when somebody is making homophobic or transphobic comments, and ways to provide support to those who need it.
At the end of the workshop, participants are given a MTA Rainbow sticker to
place on their office or residence room door to show that the room is a safe and inclusive space for people of all sexualities. The presence of the rainbow sticker around campus will help MTA's queer community feel welcome and safe, raise awarenes, and promote a general atmosphere of acceptance and
diversity.
