About Us...

The Eurhetorian Society was originally founded in 1841 and over the years became a strong competitive force in Canadian debate, attending National and even World competitions, with many notable alumni graduating from our ranks. For reasons unbeknownst to us, the society died out in 2001, and MTA went without debate for 8 years. In September of 2008 the society was reinstated as the Mount Allison Eurhetorian Debate Society and had a successful first year, becoming a full member of CUSID (Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate) and attending several tournaments. At the end of this first year, CUSID East awarded the Eurhetorians the opportunity to host the CUSID Atlantic Novice Championships. Currently the focus of the society is to increase its numbers and improve its rankings at tournaments, as well as increasing the society funds so that we can travel to more tournaments in other provinces and send more teams. We also aim to host at least one tournament every year and one in-house tournament for Mount Allison students.

Donations

The Eurhetorian Debating Society is always trying to raise funds for our various activities. Tournaments especially can be quite expensive, with registration often being between $80-$120 per team, as well as the added costs of transportation and lodging. We manage our finances in order to:
- send as many debaters as possible to tournaments throughout the year
- host our own tournaments (both for debating teams from other schools and for students at Mount Allison)
- increase publicity and club building

There is no better cause than the development of knowledge and critical thinking. If you would like to support the Mount Allison Eurhetorian Debating Society, please contact one of the executive members for further information.
