Welcome to the MTA Eurhetorian Debate Society! Every week we get together to debate and participate in various social activities. Everyone is welcome to join, with no experience necessary and has the opportunity to participate competitively in tournaments in other universities and non-competitively in-house. Levels of society and time commitment are entirely flexible, so even if you just want to show up occasionally to listen to our debates or attend every tournament, you’re welcome into the society! Here you will find more information on who we are and what we do:
What is Debate?
You may hear that debate is a form of organized arguing. While that in part may be true, debating goes far beyond that. Debate, rather, is the art of effective convincing and mental combat. Two to four teams are pitted against each other and are expected to present their side’s case, use logic and reasoning to convince the audience they’re right, pick apart the opposition and destroy their case, all the while employing good public speaking skills to capture and entertain their audience.
Condensed version: Debate is the awesomely intense sport of mind-duelling.
Regular Meetings are every Monday and Thursday at 7:00 PM in Avard-Dixon 112
