Mount Allison's campus Environmental society meets every Tuesday in Cuthbertson House at 6:00 p.m. With a focus on reducing our impact on the earth, we take one light step at a time, acting towards positive change. You will find us working on all kinds of environmental issues on campus and in the local community, in some areas such as education, food, living and politics. We invite new members or curious folk to join us at any time.
Our history has included a legacy of advocating for the role of the university community in environmental stewardship. Successes have seen a strong partnership form between the administration and students. Leadership initiatives have included the Environmental Audit (conducted this summer), the Climate Change Caravan (2001), and the Mount Allison Sustainable Residence Initiative, and recently finding a home in Cuthbertson House.
This year we plan to continue sharing our enthusiasm with students and the public, as well as collaborating on new ideas in building awareness. Some past projects we've done include:
Environmental Education
- On-campus: information delivery (displays, posters & pamphlets)
- Off-campus: guest appearances at the local elementary, middle and highschools
Food
- Advocating for local and organic options at the meal hall, Sackville and beyond
Days of Action
- Clean Energy Day, Car-Free Day, Buy-Nothing Day
- Ethical Giving Campaign during the holidays
Field Trips
- Conferences (N.B. Environmental Network, Sierra Youth Coalition), picnic in the forest, tours...
SAC Committees
- Supporting two Environmental representatives
