Meet the Team

The seven student members of this year’s group were selected on the basis of an application and interview process conducted by last year’s participants. We come from a wide array of backgrounds, including diverse international travel experience. Our extra-curricular activities range from campus-affiliated activities to individual community involvement. Our personal achievements and academic interests have created a group as diverse in its strengths and assets as it is in its perspectives. Once our YPJ team was established, we invited Cindy Crossman, Mount Allison's Nurse/Educator, to join us in Jamaica.

Amy Pieroway is a fourth year biochemistry student who hails from Pasadena, Newfoundland. Her upbringing in rural Newfoundland gave her a unique view on the world that has always pushed her to get involved and try new things. She spent her high school years at an international college in British Columbia where her focus was promoting international understanding, and helping disadvantaged youth in the surrounding communities. Since coming to Mount Allison, she has been involved in many aspects of the Sackville community, including her work as a tutor to second grade French-immersion children, an athletic trainer, and the president of the bioscience society. She hopes that Youth Partnership with Jamaica will provide her with the educational opportunity of a cross-cultural exchange, and allow her to get to know another country through the eyes of its diverse population.

Kelsey Crawford is a fourth year Science student completing a Major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. She has recently returned to Mount Allison from 7 months abroad including an exchange with the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, and several months spent backpacking New Zealand and Australia. Kelsey has a wide range of interests from athletics to bioethics and hopes to pursue a career in medicine or international health policy and planning. She eagerly looks forward to the cross cultural opportunity that YPJ will provide and the chance to share a more compassionate and informed international perspective with the Mount Allison and Sackville community upon her return.

Jeff Bethune was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on March 10th, 1987. He grew up in Halifax, and attended high school at the Halifax Grammar School. He sailed competitively, attending the Canada Games in Saskatchewan in 2005, until he graduated high school. He has spent the last summer tree planting in Ontario, and teaching sailing in Chester, Nova Scotia. He completed his first year at Mt. Allison in 2006 with a course load of mostly sciences, which developed to his second year that focuses on Biology and Chemistry. His interests include music, where he is part of a recreational band, sailing, and winter sports.

Vanessa Yu is a native of Tsawwassen, British Columbia and currently in her second year of her B.A. degree focusing on Environmental Studies/Geography and Fine Arts. She is a senior residence monitor and PSA Director for CHMA, as well as being a programmer of a weekly show that aims to bring different groups of people together by breaking down barriers. Her upbringing in a bilingual household, in a multicultural city, and participation in cross-cultural workshops, studies, and events have wet her appetite to explore the globe. She is especially interested in caring for its young and old, special populations, and its forests. With Youth Partnership with Jamaica, she hopes to raise awareness within herself and others and learn how to be a better global citizen. Hopefully, she’ll be able to incorporate her experience into her artwork and share the adventure with others.

He is currently the President of the Mount Allison Chapter of the Liver Foundation. Mark is organized and a hard worker. He feels like he has great leadership skills and he believes this trip will enhance his leadership skills and organization. He also feels this trip will better him as a person and set a foundation for all things he hopes to achieve later in life.

Sarah Miles is in her fourth year of learning about psychology and biology at Mount Allison and is currently most interested in cognitive processes and genetics. Sarah has also been lucky enough to play varsity hockey, play the French horn and tutor elementary school children in her time at Mount Allison.
