Psychological Services

Licensed counsellors provide primarily short-term individual therapy for students experiencing challenges in their personal lives. Common issues students come to talk about in counselling include: stress, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, eating issues, addiction, and a variety of other issues. Counselling is a process by which we listen to your concerns, help you identify goals, and help you create a plan. We also often teach skills and provide resources to help get you where you want to go.  It is our hope that, through counselling, we can help students feel better, learn to manage and overcome challenges, and find solutions that work for them.

Some students admit that they initially feel a bit hesitant about coming to see a counsellor. But once they get here, students often say that they find the counsellors easy to talk to and wish that they had come sooner. Please note that people will not know that you are coming for counselling when you come to the Wellness Centre, as students access this centre for a variety of different services – including massage and medical care.

If you are seeking counselling for personal issues, please stop by the Wellness Centre to fill out the appropriate forms. Once these forms have been completed, the receptionist will make an initial appointment for you. Counsellors can also provide referrals for other providers or specialists as needed. You can also choose to have a friend or relative come with you to your first appointment if this would help you feel more comfortable. Most students are able to adequately resolve their counselling concerns in 1-8 sessions (approximately 50 minutes/session). Additional counselling services can be provided or arranged based on availability and need.

Students interested in making a counselling appointment may visit the Wellness Centre on the ground floor of the Wallace McCain Student Centre between the hours of 8:30am-12:00pm and 1:00pm – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. You can also call 506-364-2163 or email counsellor@mta.ca. If you are experiencing an issue which is urgent in nature, please state this when you make your appointment. Please keep in mind that punctuality is important, so try to arrange to be on time for your appointment(s). We request that you cancel any appointment(s) at least 24 hours in advance. In the event of inclement weather, please call the office to confirm your appointment. Students who continue to miss their appointments may be placed on a waiting list until services become more available.
