2010-11 Year of Culture and Creativity

Imaginative. Original. Motivated. Talented. Accomplished. Words to describe Mount Allison, its students, and the University’s strategic emphasis for the 2010-11 academic year.

Prepare to be inspired as Mount Allison celebrates the Year of Culture and Creativity.

The Year of Culture and Creativity will emphasize the role that creativity plays at Mount Allison and, more broadly, in Canadian culture as a whole, from a broad range of disciplinary perspectives. Creativity is often associated with the traditional ‘arts’ fields such as Fine Arts, Music, and Drama, and at Mount Allison these disciplines thrive with the active participation of students and faculty alike.

The Year of Culture and Creativity will celebrate the rich cultural life of the Fine Arts on campus, but will also extend the concept of creativity to other fields, including the humanities, the sciences, and the social sciences. The challenge here is to re-examine our role as creative thinkers and producers of culture; specifically, The Year of Culture and Creativity will celebrate Mount Allison’s contribution to the cultural fabric of this region and to the world beyond. Reciprocally, we will also consider the ways in which we are defined by the cultures in which we live and work.

The President’s Speakers Series

This year we have an exciting list of visiting speakers who will assist us in this celebration of culture and creativity. Each speaker is a prominent member in his or her chosen field, and will offer ideas about creativity and cultural development from diverse professional perspectives.

Bestselling author and CBC personality Thomas King will talk about the power of storytelling. Dynamic radio and television host Jian Ghomeshi will explore the role of popular culture in social change. Cirque du Soleil’s director of creation, Lyn Heward, will show us how to develop our personal creativity in business and leadership. The multi-talented Stratford actress Cynthia Dale will perform songs and stories. And the husband-and-wife team of Steven Pinker, the world-famous cognitive scientist, and Rebecca Goldstein, the award-winning novelist and philosopher, will explore the creative mind from the fields of cognitive science, philosophy, and literature.

Other speakers in the series will include Jennifer Radbourne, Susan Chalmers-Gauvin, John Dickson, Ben Reeves, and David Adams Richards, among others.

Immerse yourself in the cultural, and re-connect with your creativity. There are lots of ways to get involved:

  • Take a course in art, poetry, music, literature, or drama
  • Discover new passions (or rediscover those creative urges you have long forgotten)
  • Celebrate your individuality
  • Find your voice.

Make Mount Allison your own personal art gallery — where new ideas are displayed, discussed, and debated. You will gain a depth of understanding and a well-rounded experience that is second to none.
