Marking Time and Making Space: Developing a Research Nexus in Creativity and the Management of Cultural Resources

January 16-17, 2009

A two-day symposium to launch the program brought together members of the university, with selected guests from local communities and cultural organizations, to discuss the objectives and purpose of the grant, to obtain input into how the proposed program might function, and to lay the groundwork for the rest of the three-year grant, including the seed grants and potential longer term funding. The event was facilitated by Dawn Arnold, Chair / Présidente of Festival Frye Festival, and featured panel presentations from representatives of external organizations and faculty members, in addition to smaller group discussions.

(howwhatwhenwherewhy) culture works creative practice annd research roundtables

May 21-22, 2009

In May of 2009, Cultureworks presented two roundtable forums on emerging intersections in the research, creative investigation, and management of cultural resources. The roundtables provided an opportunity for faculty and community members to explore their common interests in the emerging practice of culture, as well as possible partnerships for further activity in the future. In conversation with invited speakers and panelists, these sessions offered the opportunity to discuss, develop and hone ideas and concepts as we considered points of convergence as well as directions in relation to developing research trends and new grounds of creative and critical expertise.

The roundtables introduced faculty research and creative projects in conversation with the perspectives of visiting speakers who offered starting points for discussion of the nature, effects, and potential of culture, and the relationship between cultural form and inquiry. As host to an evolving range of research practices, alliances and projects, Cultureworks will reflect diverse interdisciplinary networks within and beyond the university. The exchange of ideas probed the intersection of research and creative practice and how they might inform each other and the forging of new frameworks and models of investigation.
