ACADEMIC ADVISING:
At every stage of your degree programme there are resources to help you.

New students, first year and undecided majors

At Mount Allison, students are not required to declare their major/minor until the end of the second year of their programmes i.e. when they have completed 54 credits.
For information on the general requirements for your degree, First-Year Academic Advisors are available during the phone-in advising period, and the Academic and Career Counsellor is available year round.

The new Student Academic Advising Booklet (link to pdf) has been designed to answer many of your questions.

Decided Majors

Once you have decided on your major you should speak with the advisor in your programme to ensure you are enrolled in the correct courses. Click here to find the faculty member who will help you plan your degree programme.

Academic Dean’s Approval

Sometimes it is necessary to have the Academic Dean’s permission to enroll in a course. Go to section 6 of the University Calendar by clicking here to see several circumstances in which Academic Dean's approval is necessary.

Role of the Registrar

The Registrar confirms by degree audit that requirements have been fulfilled and the student is eligible to graduate, and will also advise students of missing or insufficient requirements. Students should already have consulted with programme advisors before they contact the Registrar with questions about programme requirements. In consultation with the appropriate academic department(s) and Academic Dean(s), the Registrar oversees letters of permission and transfer credits for courses taken elsewhere.

Academic Dean’s Approval is necessary

  • For specially-designed Majors/minors, as stipulated in Sections 7.2.12, 7.2.17, 7.3.15, 7.3.20 of the University Academic Calendar.
  • For overloads of up to 3 credits per semester, if the student has a GPA below 3.0 in the previous term.
  • Students with a pervious-term GPA of 3.0 or more do not require approval, and 4th-year students (those with 84 credits or more) do not require a minimum GPA for approval to overload 3 credits per semester.
  • For permission to overload in any case for more than 3 credits per semester.
  • For full-time students who wish to register in courses offered through the Department of Continuous Learning as part of their normal course load. For students on Academic Probation who wish to register for spring or summer courses offered through the Department of Continuous Learning.

Students participating in an International Programme

International Programme Advisors counsel students intending to study outside Canada on an approved Mount Allison international programme. Counselling takes place prior to the student’s departure, as much as possible with appropriate Mount Allison departments, and may be ongoing during the student’s year away. On the students’s return, the International Programme Advisor, in consultation with appropriate Department Head(s) and/or Academic Dean(s), will recommend appropriate transfer credits to the Registrar for each student returning from the international programme for which s/he is responsible.
