The
Academic & Career Counsellor provides general information on applying
to graduate schools but often an academic department in your chosen
academic field will provide invaluable insight and experience in gaining
acceptance in graduate school or professional programmes. Some departments
run special information sessions on applying to graduate schools or
other programmes. Programme advisors should be able to alert students
to these opportunities. Given the diversity of post-graduate opportunities,
however, it is important for students to realize that their best source
of detailed, current information may be the graduate school itself.
This is particularly important for scholarship and bursary applications
as well as for admissions procedures and deadlines. While Mount Allison’s
programme advisors can outline the nature of a graduate opportunity,
they are not the ones who make admissions decisions. Please ensure that
you are in contact with potential programmes directly and that you follow
admissions procedures carefully. Pay particular attention to programme
deadlines that are administered with centralized offices (as is the
case for Ontario universities). Programme advisors can also assist in
your choice of academic and professional referees. These letters of
support are crucial to your application so don’t leave your request
for letters too late!
