  Weekly "To Do" Lists

A very basic tool for time managers is the “to do” list. The items on the list are study tasks that need to be completed. Often in our lives we experience the combined pressure of many tasks at one point in time and, if these study tasks are not written down, they can be forgotten or postponed until it is too late to complete them adequately. This is particularly true of regular study tasks, such as reading the assigned pages of the text, solving math problems, or reviewing class notes soon after class. A manageable time frame for a “to do” list is a single week.

The worksheet below is an example of the type of list that can help you to plan each week. Record three types of activities: course work tasks; personal events; and upcoming major tests and assignments (include the dates). To complete this exercise, look at your monthly plan and check for other major upcoming events that are not related to your academics. As you complete the worksheet, try to limit the course work tasks so that you can complete a task in less than three hours. If a task will take longer than three hours, divide it into smaller tasks. This is only one example of a weekly plan. Adapt and change this format to fit your personal style.
