The rotary adapter allows specimens to be examined at a stage tilt of 90 degrees while retaining full motion in the X and Y directions. Stage rotation is translated to the axis of tilt so that all sides of the specimen can be examined. The animation below shows a specimen rotated in this manner.

The schematic (PDF) for the adapter is specific to JEOL "T" series columns, but can be easily modified for other microscopes.
