- Change the way you travel: carpool whenever possible, coordinate larger trips such as cab rides to the airport with friends and others headed to the same place. Take the bus or train for longer trips, when possible, rather than driving or flying.
- Minimize packaging and disposable options: carry a reusable water bottle and/or reusable mug with you wherever you go to avoid the use of plastic water bottles and disposable cups. Consider carrying your own cutlery or dishware when you know that you’ll be eating food while out. Bring your own reusable grocery bags when shopping – there are many that can be rolled up to fit in pockets or purses, making it easy to always have one at hand. Reduce pre-packaged condiment waste and napkins at fast food restaurants by not taking more than you need.
- Re-think the types of products you purchase: look for products with minimal packaging (try buying in bulk!), those made with recycled products, and things produced locally.
- Support local businesses: try to purchase products from companies operating and sourcing their products from within the region; not only will you be reducing impacts from transportation, but also supporting the local economy (you’ll get fresher products too!).
- Challenge the decisions of those around you: why is your dad idling his car for 10 minutes? How come your friend is throwing their Argosy in the green bin? Why are your roommates purchasing mangos and strawberries in January?
