INTRODUCTION: What is Public Art?

So you want your art to be seen by thousands of people, of all ages and classes. Your want to learn how to co-operate with other creative minds. You want to make work that functions within a specific space and complements already existing structures while challenging that same space. It seems as though you want to get involved in public art!

Art in public places has the potential to disrupt or enhance the everyday life of the public as well as the features of a once-unremarkable space. It draws attention to the environment, architecture, and physical space usually ignored in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

On the other hand some people may see the art in their space as an invasion, something that they do not understand. Something that is "in the way". The implementation of an aesthetic object must be carefully planned and concidered in order to prevent an invasion of space or the imposition of an aesthetic object. This kind of disconnected public art is at times referred to, in pejorative terms, as "plop art" and is considered threatening or insulting to some people.
