In the past decades as Japan came to play an important role in the global economy, interest in its culture and language has grown remarkably. Today over one million foreigners are learning Japanese. They use their skill in trade, transportation, law, education and other fields.

At Mount Allison University, the Japanese language course was started in 1993, as one of a few such academic studies in Atlantic Canada. Now the university offers four 3-credit courses at two levels, Japanese 1001, 1011 and 2001, 2011.
