Course Description:
This course aims to introduce students to the rich diversity of late
eighteenth-century German literature and to explore the emergence of a national
literary identity. Texts from a variety of different genres will be read in order
to demonstrate the complexity of expression available and to elucidate the unique
features of the cultural and literary movements of the epoch. Historical developments
will be discussed to provide additional context to the readings. The course will
be conducted in seminar format, and will include lectures, individual presentations
and class discussions.
