After a brief discussion of the history of moving pictures, and in particular the history of German filmmaking from its beginnings with the Bioskop of the Brothers Skladanowski in 1895, over the birth of UFA (UNIVERSAL Studio Company), the early world classics such as Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, Metropolis, The Blue Angel, to the exodus of German talent to Hollywood in the Nazi years, the course will investigate the attempts of Post-1945 German film makers to build upon their heritage and develop a popular and meaningful German film which would be both, aesthetically accomplished and and politically relevant.  Specifically, the impact of the Oberhausen Manifesto (1962) and the development of the resulting New German Film (FRG) will be analysed and paralleled by a discussion of the East German cinema of state-decreed Socialist Realism, and a glance at Austrian and Swiss productions.  As a result, the course will also offer insights into the political, social, and cultural development of the German speaking countries in the second half of the 20th Century.  Emphasis will also be placed upon the communicative, semiotic aspects of the medium.
