Japanese 1001 3CR and Japanese 1011 3 CR
These courses are designed to introduce the basic elements of the language. The grammatical structure, pronunciation and three writing systems, HIRGANA, KATAKANA and approximately 70 KANJI characters will be taught. Review quizzes will be given on a regular basis and classroom work will be supplemented by oral practice sessions/language lab activities.

The Japanese language is a product of thousands of years of a unique history. In order to enhance the understanding of the language, various aspects of the Japanese culture including current topics will also be discussed. Audio-visual materials, such as videos/films/slides will be viewed. As well, newspaper/magazine articles will be examined.

This course is intended for students with no prior background in Japanese.

Japanese 2001 3 CR and Japanese 2011 3CR
Japanese 2001 and 2011 are a continuation of Japanese 1001 and 1011.

Emphasis is placed on understanding grammatical elements and acquiring communication skills in both writing and speaking. Approximately 150 additional KANJI characters will be learned. Various aspects of the Japanese culture including current topics will also be discussed. Audio-visual materials, such as videos/films/slides will be viewed. As well, newspaper/magazine articles will be examined.

Three hours of class and one hour of language laboratory are scheduled per week.

The students who have finished Japanese 2011 can have their proficiency measured and certified by taking the level four of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. This test is devised and administered by the Japan Foundation and Association of International Education, Japan.

Prerequisites: Japanese 1001 and 1011

Workshop - WORKSHOP (Non-credit)
This is a non-credit workshop offered to the students who have finished Japanese 2001 and 2011. The curriculum emphasizes oral practices, vocabulary building, KANJI writing based on the grammar studied in Japanese 2001 and 2011.
