Objective
These courses are designed to introduce the basic elements of the Japanese language. Students will learn the grammatical structure, pronunciation and two written language systems (HIRAGANA and KATAKANA). Approximately 70 KANJI will also be introduced over the two terms. Review quizzes are given on regular basis, and classroom work is supplemented by oral practice sessions/language lab activities.

In order to enhance the understanding of the language, various aspects of the Japanese culture will be explained as well. The series of video cassettes, JAPANESE PEOPLE AND LANGUAGE, THE WAY OF LIFE IN JAPAN, etc. will be viewed in class.
