Bibliography for Canadian Artists

General Sources
J. Russell Harper, Painting in Canada: A History 2nd ed. Toronto: 1977. A good general survey of the history of painting in Canada.

Denis Reid, A Concise History of Canadian Painting 2nd ed. Toronto: 1988. A concise alternative to Harper's text.

Maria Tippett, By A Lady: Celebrating Three Centuries of Art by Canadian Women Toronto: 1992. A well-illustrated survey of the important but often neglected topic of Canadian women's art.

Homer Watson
J. Russell Harper, Homer Watson, R.C.A., 1885-1936: Paintings and Drawings. Ottawa: 1963. One of the few easily accessible sources on Watson. If your library doesn't have this book and you want to know more about Watson, you might want to ask for it on inter-library loan.

The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson

Charles Hill, The Group of Seven: Art for a Nation. Ottawa: 1995. A lavishly illustrated text written by a strong defender of the Group's art.

A.Y. Jackson, A Painter's Country. Toronto: 1967. The autobiography of one of the leading members of the Group makes for interesting reading.

Denis Reid, The Group of Seven/Le Groupe des Sept. Ottawa: 1970. An older but insightful study which provides a more critical perspective.

Emily Carr

Paula Blanchard, The Life of Emily Carr. Toronto: 1987. A good, detailed biography. Doris Shadbolt, The Art of Emily Carr. Toronto: 1979. A well- illustrated, interpretive text.

Maria Tippett, Emily Carr: A Biography. Toronto: 1979. An award- winning biography.

Paul-Émile Borduas

François-Marc Gagnon, Paul-Émile Borduas. Montréal: 1978. A wonderfully illustrated catalogue with an intelligent interpretive text. A good place to begin any study of Borduas.

Bill Reid and the Art of Canadian First Nations

Doris Shadbolt, Bill Reid. Vancouver: 1986. A good book to begin a study of Bill Reid.

Thaddeus Holownia
Thaddeus Holownia, Dykelands. 1983. A collection of images from a very popular exhibition.
