| Dr.
Rainer L. Hempel was born in Wurzen, Germany. He fled with his family
to West Berlin in 1953 and eventually settled near Aachen, where he
attended a Gymnasium. In 1958 he emigrated to Canada and
continued his education at the Universities of Manitoba and British
Columbia, where he graduated with a B.A. (mathematics and German),
an M.A. and a Ph.D. in German literature in 1973. He has published
widely on the subject of early German immigration to New Brunswick,
including the book New Voices on the Shores in 2000. He has
been teaching German language, literature, history at Mount Allison
University in Sackville, N.B. for 30 years. Read
