CHANGES TO THE BIOLOGY PROGRAMME FOR 2011 AND BEYOND

MAJOR in Biology is 60 credits earned as follows:
6 from BIOL 1001, 1501
3 from PHYS 1051, 1041
3 from MATH 1111 or 1151
3 from MATH 1121, 2221, or COMP 1631

3 from CHEM 1001
3 from BIOC 1001
18 from BIOC 2001, BIOL 2101, 2301, 2401, 2601, 2701, 3011, 3101
21 additional credits from Biology at the 3/4000 level

HONOURS in Biology is 75 credits earned as follows:
60 as in the major, including ……(the rest of this is the same as in the current calendar)

 

Important Points to Note!!
(Highlighted in red above)

1) The Major in Biology is reduced to 60 credits (from 63) and the Honours in Biology is reduced to 75 credits (from 78)

2) The Physics requirements have changed. You now have to take only 3 credits instead of 6 and they must come from one of two courses - Physics 1051 or 1041 (a new course for life sciences)

3) The Math Requirements have changed. Its the same number of credits but just a shorter list from which to take them.

4) The Chemistry requirement has been reduced from 6 credits to 3 credits with the elimination of the requirement to take Chem 1021.

5) The number of credits in the upper level (third and fourth year) has increased from 18 to 21.

 

CHANGES IN COURSES LISTED IN THE CALENDAR

These are the changes have been made to the Biology courses listed in the Calendar:

1) The following courses have been deleted:
Biology 1211 (World Ecosystems),
Biology 3311 (Developmental Biology(see below*)),
Biology 3331 and 3341 (Selected Topics in Marine Science I and II) and
Biology 3611 (Mammalogy)

2) The following courses have been added:
Biology 3371 (Principles of Aquaculture)**
Biology 3631 (Embryology)*
Biology 3641 (Genetic Regulation of Development)*
Biology 4621 (Genes, Cells and Disease)**

*Biology 3631 and 3641 are a result of splitting Bio 3311 into two courses.

** Both of these courses have been offered recently under a Bio 3991 or 4991 course number. They now have been given regular course numbers.
