Course Description
A course to permit an advanced student to pursue a special field
of study, or to take advantage of a different approach under the
direction of an appropriate faculty member. Each student will
select his/her own topic (library, field, or laboratory) in consultation
with this faculty member and the Head of the Department.
Method
Each student's program will be planned individually using
lectures, reading, tutorials, laboratory work, etc. A written
proposal must be submitted to the supervisor for transmission
to the department for approval.
Pre-requisites
Permission of the Department. Each student must obtain, prior
to registration, consent of a faculty member who is willing to
supervise their work.
Policy Statement
Biology 4950 - Special Topics in Biology is a full course designed
to offer students the opportunity to pursue studies of some aspect
of Biology which is of particular interest to them. The course
is normally open only to students who are seriously interested
in the study of Biology and who have fourth year status within
the University. In order to enroll for this course, permission
must be obtained from one of the Biology faculty members who is
willing to supervise the project. The title and an outline of
the project must be submitted to the supervisor, so that the project
may be discussed and approved by the entire faculty of the Biology
Department before being forwarded to the Dean of Science. The
particular design of the project will be decided upon by the student
and the supervisor. Currently, the requirement for entrance into
this course is fourth year status and a minimum average is not
required. However, this is a full credit course and will require
between 8 and 12 hours of student work each week throughout the
academic year. Summer research will often constitute part of the
project, but such activity will not reduce the time that must
be devoted to Biology 4950 during the academic year. The Biology
Department will not tolerate a situation where a student uses
the flexibility of Biology 4950 in order to spend more time on
other courses and thus devote a minimal and unacceptable amount
of time to the Biology 4950 project. |
