Edmund Noel Dawe, winner of a National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Postgraduate Scholarhip in Physics and a Special Graduate Entrance Scholarship at Simon Fraser University.

Eric Alexandre Ouellette, winner of a National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Graduate Scholarship in Physics, the President's Research Scholarship and a Graduate Scholarship at the University of Victoria.

Denis Andre St-Onge, winner of a National Sciences and Engineering Research Council Postgraduate Scholarship in Physics and a Teaching Assistantship to University of Alberta.

Marc Edouard Vallee, winner of a National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Postgraduate Scholarship in Physics at McMaster University.



April 2008, University Prize Exam Success
The Physics Department congratulates Eric Ouellette on placing 9th in this year's Canadian Association of Physicists University Prize Examination. This examination is designed to challenge upcoming physicists and he has quite clearly proven his capabilities in placing so high out of 79 participants.

March 2008, James Hoyland named Physics Professor of the Year
The students of the Department of Physics honoured Dr. James Hoyland as the 2008 Outstanding Professor of Physics for his unique teaching style and dedication to his students. Dr. Hoyland received this honour at this year's Physics Banquet.

March 2008, Four Physics Students Win NSERC Graduate Scholarships
Congratulations to four of our physics students who won NSERC Graduate Scholarships. Eric Ouellette and Marc Vallee won NSERC-CGS's and Noel Dawe and Denis St-Onge were winners of NSERC-PGS's.

February 2008, Apics Undergraduate Physics Conference (AUPAC) hosted by U.P.E.I. Eric Ouellette was awarded the prize for second best oral presentation for his research at this year's Apics Undergraduate Physics Conference (AUPAC) held at the University of Prince Edward Island, February 8 to 10, 2008. Five other students from the department presented their research at the conference. Those students were: Patrick deNiverville, Joey Gallant, Denis St-Onge, Marc Vallee and Rory Woods. Next year's AUPAC conference will be held at the University of New Brunswick.

May 2007, Summer Research
There are ten undergrduate researchers in the department this summer. They are working on research projects in theoretical particle physics, solar energy, astrophysics, medical physics, material science, x-ray scattering and experimental subatomic physics. Congratulations to the seven students who won NSERC and university summer research awards: Noel Dawe, Denis St-Onge, Marc Vallee, Brian Crouse, Joey Gallant, and Eric Ouellette. Patrick deNiverelle is being funded by a Bell Fellowship and other students are being funded through faculty research grants.

May 2007, Convocation Honours Congratulations to our graduates from the 2007 Convocation. Two students won major graduate awards: Markus Baker (NSERC PGS to University of Victoria), and Ellen Milley (NSERC PGS to Univeristy of Calgary). Ellen Milley won the R.N. Varma Memorial Medal in Physics.

March 2007, Ralf Bruening named Physics Professor of the Year
At the 2007 Mount Allison Physics Banquet Ralf Bruening was honoured by current students as Mount Allison Physics Faculty Member of the Year. Ralf is noted for his generous individual help to students, his very approachable manner, and excellent undergraduate research opportunities in his group. Congratulations!

May 2006, Convocation Honours
Congratulations to our graduates from the 2006 Convocation. Four students won major graduate awards: Alma Bardon (NSERC PGS to U. Toronto), Ashley Faloon (McGill), Kyle Hill (Rhodes Scholar, to Oxford) and Vance Morrison (NSERC PGS to McGill). Kyle Hill won the R.N. Varma Memorial Medal in Physics as well as the Alumni Academic Achievement Award.

March 2006, Physics Professor of Year - Dave Hornidge At the 2006 Mount Allison Physics Banquet
Dave Hornidge was honoured by current students as Mount Allison Physics Faculty Member of the Year. Dave is noted for his generous individual help to students, his very approachable manner, and excellent undergraduate research opportunities in his group, which include on-site work at the Mainz Microtron in Germany. Congratulations!

December 2005, Kyle Hill Named Rhodes Scholar Graduating Honours Physics and Mathematics student
Kyle Hill is one of Canada 's 11 Rhodes Scholars for this year. Kyle is an author on 5 journal papers, has won first place in Canada in a research paper competition, is a gifted musician and active in student government, and has worked in a number of capacities as a teaching assistant and teaching intern. March-April 2005, Mount Allison on Physics Journal Covers
Mount Allison research and teaching has been featured on several journal covers. In March-April 2005 the special physics education issue of Physics in Canada featured four photos from our teaching labs. The November 11 issue of Physical Review Letters featured an image by graduating student Alma Bardon to accompany an article (based on her research at NRC) on attosecond double ionization molecular dynamics. Most recently, the January 2006 issue of the Canadian Undergraduate Physics Journal has a cover image from our medical physics lab to accompany an article by 2005 graduate Andrew McDonald.

Oct. 2005, Mount Allison Makes List of Particle Physics Research Institutions
Mount Allison's physics department was recently added to the Particle Data Group, a list of the high-energy physics laboratories and agencies from around the world, published annually. See press release for more details.
