A winning tradition
Mount Allison Commerce students have participated
in and won top prizes at various case competitions,
including the Intercollegiate Business
Competition (Queen’s University), “Are You Smarter
than an CEO” (Saint Mary’s University), and the
Wallace McCain Institute MBA Case Competition.
These competitions serve as the perfect venue for
Mount Allison students to display their innovative
and creative approaches to various realistic business
issues — and are also a great way to interact with
business students from other schools, alumni, and
local business leaders.
Are you smarter than a
CEO?
Three teams of Mount Allison Commerce
students advanced to the final round of a case competition
entitled “Are You Smarter than a CEO.” Nineteen
teams from universities across Atlantic Canada created
short videos outlining recommendations for a strategic
challenge developed by the New Brunswick-based real
estate company PropertyGuys.com. Only three teams
advanced to the final round — all of them from Mount
Allison University. The Real Reality Solution
team of Jason Patterson, Lindsay Tanner, Mike McKinnon,
and Adam Fraser was named winner of the competition
on December 7th, earning bragging rights and a prize
of $1000.
The teams developed a 20-minute
video and submitted a written report detailing their
proposed recommendations for the organization. Commerce
professor Dr. Gina Grandy incorporated the competition
into her fourth-year Strategic Management course.
The two other teams to make it to the finals were
the Property Girls (Samantha Lebans, Amanda
Burns, Caroline Millette, and Lauren Macdonald)
and Property Girls and Guy (Caitlyn Murphy,
Rachel Brookins, Angela Mitton, and Jamie Smith).

Students
win Breakthru!
Commerce students Joshua Hamilton, Niel
MacIntyre, and Sally Ng representing ChemGreen Innovation
won the top prize of $125,000 in the New Brunswick Innovation
Foundation Breakthru New Brunswick Business Plan Competition.
The students prepared a business plan for ChemGreen Innovation,
a company that stems from several years of research of Mount
Allison chemistry professor, Dr. Khashayar Ghandi. The company
is exploring environmentally-friendly ways to create
polymers, which plastics are made from. The commerce students
entered the competition as part of the senior commerce course
“Venture Capital and the Finance of Innovation” taught by
Dr. Nauman Farooqi.
The New Brunswick Innovation Foundation
(NBIF), which ran the competition, supports the development
of innovation by investing in early stage innovative-led
companies in New Brunswick. The students’ proposal was selected
with five others from 80 applications, in the first stage
of the competition. Click here

Bringing
home the cup!
Mount Allison commerce students Candice de Saldanha,
Marco Perico, and Andrew Nicholas have brought home the
cup! The three
students received first place in the prestigious Queen’s
School of Business annual Inter-Collegiate Business Competition
(ICBC) the weekend of January 12-14. The competition is
the oldest and largest undergraduate case competition
in Canada with teams from over 30 national and international
universities. The Mount Allison team won in the Business
Policy division competing with students from the top universities
in the country. Queen's University received second place
and Wilfrid Laurier placed third.
Twenty-six teams participated in the
initial round and only six of these were selected for
the final round. The six finalists were McGill University,
Mount Allison University, Queen's University, Simon Fraser
University, University of Calgary, and Wilfrid Laurier
University.
The students were coached by Commerce
professor Dr. Gina Grandy. She said, “The students are
a hard working, bright and enthusiastic group of individuals
who stood out as stars among their peers at the competition.
One of judges commented to us that the students who win
in this area of the competition are the most sought after
graduates of the top consulting and corporate firms in
Canada. In addition, they are seen to be the best business
students in the country. I am delighted to be associated
with them.”
Marco said, “The pressure slowly built
up during the weekend, as we were one of the last divisions
to compete. We had time to see the high caliber of the
other teams in the divisions before us. The five hours
that we spent in the room analyzing the case were extremely
stressful, with some high-tension moments. However, I
suppose they liked what we did. Most importantly, I don't
think any of this would have been possible without the
coaching and help of Dr. Grandy, who truly is an outstanding
professor. We couldn't have made it without her.”
