Evaluating Governance Structures in Churches
Amanda Burns
Nonprofit religious organizations are driven primarily by spiritual and moral goals rather than profit. The general decline in active participation in churches across North America has resulted in increasing attention to the business side of religious organizations. Religious nonprofits focus on their missions and as a result sometimes neglect the development and implementation of internal controls to protect resources. There is much to learn about the role of the board and the effective use of financial controls in these organizations. Amanda’s research is exploring the governance structures of churches in Canada to determine best practices in governance. She has been awarded a Summer Research Award and this research will form the basis of her honors thesis under the supervision of Dr. Gina Grandy. |
