Field Trips Field trips to boardrooms and businesses around
the country and across North America also enhance the learning
experience. In the past, Commerce students have travelled
to Prince Edward Island for a Bioscience business sector tour,
to Montreal for the John Molson Sports Marketing Conference,
and to New York as part of the program. Through these trips,
senior Commerce students have had the opportunity to meet
with business leaders in their corporate boardrooms and on
their factory floors. Experts in various business fields also
share their knowledge and experience with students on campus
as visiting speakers, through videoconferencing, as guest
lecturers, and as judges for in-class competitions. |

• Bioscience business sector tour, Prince Edward Island,
fall 2010 Commerce students travelled to Prince Edward Island (PEI) this fall for a two day intensive lesson on the island’s emerging bioscience business sector. The trip was part of courses in Organizational Theory and Strategic Management. The two days were filled with guest lectures, a roundtable session with the government partners of the PEI Bioscience Cluster, and visits to local companies and organizations. At the roundtable were representatives from Innovation PEI, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs & International Trade Canada, and the National Research Council Institute for Nutrisciences & Health (NRC-INH). The field trip was organized by Commerce faculty, Dr. Judith Holton and Dr. Gina Grandy, in collaboration with the office of the PEI BioAlliance. Students visited BioVectra which is the largest Canadian company manufacturing small-molecule Advanced Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API’s), advanced intermediates, and cGMP bioprocessing reagents and Island Abbey Foods Ltd., a specialty food producer. One of Island Abbey’s innovative products is Honey Drop, a non-sticky, dried, individual serving of honey. The students also toured the lab facilities of the NRC-INH and Canada’s Smartest Kitchen, a research kitchen at the Culinary Institute of Canada where new food products are developed.
• John Molson Sports Marketing Conference in Montreal, Fall 2009 Eight commerce students from the Marketing Strategy class and commerce Professor Peter Sianchuk headed to Montreal in November to attend the John Molson Sports Marketing Conference hosted by Concordia University. Mount Allison students joined other students from across Canada to hear high profile guest speakers, attend sessions on careers in sports marketing and network with marketing professionals and other students with similar interests in the field. The lineup of speakers was a who's who in the world of sports marketing. It included Len Rhodes, VP & GeneralManager at Reebok-CCM Hockey, Gary Meagher, Senior VP of Public Relations for NHL who is also a Mount Allison alumnus, Ray Lalonde, Vice President of Sale & Marketing for the Montreal Canadiens, and Janet Duch, VP Marketing and Services for the New York Rangers.
