Increasing attendance at museums
Museums play an important role in the preservation of culture
and heritage but often struggle to attract visitors and get
them to come back. How to attract visitors to museums is the
problem that commerce student Danielle Dorn tackled for her
honours thesis at Mount Allison. Danielle drew on her own
experience for her study as she spent four summers working
at a small museum in rural Nova Scotia.
One of the main hurdles that museums face is that there are
an increasing number of leisure activities that visitors can
choose from. In a rural setting, this task becomes even more
difficult because there are no large attractions to draw people
to the area in the first place. Danielle’s study focused on
what motivates visitors to visit museums, what leaves them
satisfied when they leave, and what museums can do to increase
the number of visitors. Danielle worked under the supervision
of Dr. Rosemary Polegato. |
