Australian-born
Stuart Semple completed his undergraduate studies in geography at the
University of Sydney and his graduate work at the University of Toronto.
The year 2010 marks his fifty-fourth year of teaching geography and geographical
education, and training geography teachers, in a career that has spanned
all levels from grade 7 to university graduate courses.
He has received three national awards for his work: 1997-Excellence in Teaching (Canadian Association of Geographers); 2007-Camsell Medal (Royal Canadian Geographical Society); and 2010-Canadian Geographic Literacy (Canadian Council for Geographic Education). In addition, a fourth award, to be given annually, has been named for him by the Atlantic Division of the Canadian Geographers, in recognition of his work in the region. His international work in
geography has centred on his appointment as Chief Examiner in Geography
for the International Baccalaureate Organisation, 1996-2001. In that
capacity, he has overseen the making of a curriculum that is offered
in more than 100 countries, the setting of examinations on that curriculum,
and the training of teachers to teach geography at the rigorous standard
required by the IB. He has been privileged to train those teachers on
the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro as well as in Europe, the UK, and North
America
He is always
keen to share with others the potential of geography for helping us
understand the world around us. For that reason, he especially enjoys
working with students who are new to geography and taking it either
as an elective or with a view to it being their major. |
