“When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.”
-- Dom Helder Camara

The Sociology ESPRIT Lab is a centre for social policy research which is committed to examining social, economic and environmental issues. Undergraduate students in Mount Allison University's Sociology department systematically analyze social problems and develop policy research and proposals. The ESPRIT Lab teaches students how to do rigorous, high-quality research and analysis. The students develop concrete, practicable proposals for the improvement of social problems. In addition, ESPRIT Lab results are shared with the academic community to help foster public discussion on social problems and social policy solutions.

The ESPRIT Lab has addressed a broad range of social policy areas including environmental racism, the social determinants of HIV/AIDS, and the social causes and consequences of natural disasters. Future areas of interest include poverty, institutional racism and discrimination.

The ESPRIT Lab provides opportunities for undergraduate students interested in gaining first-hand knowledge of the activities of a research centre and contributing to research and social policy initiatives.
